Found this from my friend Alex.
The figure for military “defense” spending is nearly accurate as stipulated by the United States Fiscal Year 2012 Budget, and is in fact much higher at $716.3 billion. Amounts presented for Health, Education, and Commerce/Housing are fallacious. In 2012, Health spending was $361.625 billion, Education was $106.172 billion (this includes Education, Training, Employment, and Social Services at a federal level), and Housing was $26.62 billion.
Because each of these figures encompasses more than simply Health, Housing, or Education, the numbers illustrated in this article aren’t entirely without merit. Hundreds of billions is certainly no small figure. The problem is the proportionate spending; Military to everything else. That said, much of the work done by the military is experimental research that does contribute to massive advancements in technology. However, by delineating this task to Military/”Defense” instead of Science, Space, and Technology (itself at $30.991 billion), the work done is created for and used specifically in Imperialist, war-mongering pursuits abroad. Meanwhile, access to and quality of education suffers. For an easier, more readable layout, refer to the Wikipedia page under Total Outlays by Budget Function.
